John Finley

National Program Leader for the Human Nutrition research in the USDA-ARS

Dr. Finley serves as National Program Leader for the USDA-ARS program in Human Nutrition Research. His academic and scientific background is in education, agriculture, food production and human nutrition, and his primary interest is in linking agricultural production to human health outcomes. Dr. Finley spent his research career at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota where he worked in the area of micronutrients and phytochemicals in foods, factors that influenced their accumulation and human health benefits of consumption. Dr Finley also has served as the Director of Regulatory Affairs and Bioactive Product Development for a food and flavor company. Dr. Finley’s present role of over-seeing human nutrition research for the USDA-ARS and attempting to harmonize it with the production agriculture research program has made him realize that the key to this is development of ontologies that allow the diverse disciplines to talk to and interact with each other.
